Dogs are and always have been family. Almost daily SUFP recieves emails from people wanting us to rehome their dog or they want to dump the dog on us. They tell us this is their only option or they will “put it down” or “take it to a high kill shleter.” Some of the “reasons” we hear are — they are “moving,” “having a baby” or “the dog keeps getting out of the yard,” “has fleas,” “barks too much,” or they “don’t have the time,” the dog “fights with the other dog in the house,” “they travel too much,” “the dog is too hyper” …. the list of stupidity goes on and on and on and on.

Unless it is a VERY extenuating circumstance and rehoming the dog is truly the absolute only option (99% of the time is not the case) — KEEP YOUR DOG. The confusion, terror and hell these poor dogs go through when dumped at a shelter by their family – who they trusted – is unthinkable and devastating. Millions of innocent lives are slaughtered needlessly because of irresponsible lazy humans who believe dogs are disposable toys they can get rid of when they don’t fit into their little lives anymore. Well…we are here to tell you..dogs are not disposable and never have been. Further the @standupforpitsfoundation does not exist so people can dump their dogs on us. We are not here to make it easy for humans to give up on their dogs and it’s not our obligation to make those people feel justified because they reached out. It’s not our job or mission to save their family member. And when we reply telling them this and they fire back with vitriol, criticism and anger because they know they’re wrong, lazy and failing.

Congratulations NYC on finally recognzing dogs as family and sentient beings — it’s sad it’s taken this long and that there are still 44 states full of humans who don’t see and treat dogs as family. #standupforpits #angelforever #sallyforever #inherentlygood #dogs #are #family

New York just made a historic move by recognizing dogs as immediate family in certain legal cases, a major step forward in how the law sees our bond with them.

It’s what we’ve always known: they’re not just pets. They’re family.

6 states down, 44 to go. 🐾
